ABOUT WHITENING

Why should I whiten my smile?

For a brighter, more sparkling you! People you meet every day, at work and at play judge you by your first impression – make it your best.
Smile whitening is an essential part of grooming for most celebrities and public figures simply because they always want to look their best. When you greet someone with a beautiful white smile, you begin with a positive first impression.

Like anti-ageing creams, Smile whitening is designed to reverse the effects of an aging smile.

What is the whitening process?

Smile whitening is a proven dental bleaching process that lightens the discolorations that inevitably occur in tooth enamel. The Smile whitening gel removes most stains with a gentle chemical action that actually whitens your teeth from within. Your teeth are in fact porous and the whitening solution uses these micro pathways to reach the staining. When the active ingredient in the Smile™ gel (carbamide peroxide) breaks down, the oxygen released acts upon the stained organic deposits, which in turn causes them to oxidize into a white colour, making the overall tooth colour closer to its natural previously unstained condition.

What causes discoloration and staining?

There are many causes but the most common includes consumption of highly colored foods and beverages such as soy sauce, berries, curries, coffee, tea, red wine, smoking etc and as we age the effect of these substances accumulates and our teeth discolor.

How are stains and discolorations removed?

There are two types of stains – external and internal. External staining (e.g. calculus and tartar build ups) can only be removed by mechanical means such as brushing, scraping or by regular dentist scale and cleans.
Internal stains and discolorations can only be restored by dental chemical (bleaching) methods. The active ingredient (carbamide peroxide) enters the tooth through porous micro pathways, breaks down to release oxygen upon the stained organic deposits, which in turn causes them to whiten, making the overall tooth colour closer to its natural previously unstained colour.

Is it safe to whiten my smile?

Many dentists consider this type of smile whitening process the safest and least invasive dental cosmetic procedure. Whitening is now one of the most common dental procedures available and numerous scientific studies have proven it to be both safe and effective.

 Is the whitening process permanent?

For most people whitening will last for up to 24 months depending on diet and cleaning routines. After the initial treatment touch ups are usually done around every 6 to 12 months. Smile™ touch up kits can be purchased at any time.

 Are there any side effects?

Some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity during treatments which always disappear upon the discontinuation or completion of treatment. Desensitizing products are available if required during the whitening process. There are no other significant side effects.

What is the Smile™ whitening procedure?

When your Smile™ dentist quality whitening system arrives simply follow the “Smile™ -How to Take Your Own Impression” at home DVD tutor to make an exact impression of your teeth for fabrication of your custom fitted trays.
Package your moulds in the prepaid postage box and drop in any post box. Your impressions will be delivered to our laboratory for manufacture of your custom laboratory fabricated trays. The trays are delivered to you in less than 5 working days upon which you can begin whitening your smile.

How long does the whitening process take?

The custom fitted trays and solution are worn during the day or evening in either 2 x 40 minute sessions or 1 x 90 minute session.
Maximum results are usually achieved after 7 to 14 days (treatment can last up to 3 weeks for extremely stained teeth) however you will see changes after just a few treatments.

How important are professional lab made trays?

Very important, custom laboratory fabricated trays are soft, flexible, and comfortable. They allow you to use less gel and optimize the whitening process by maintaining an even dispersion of the gel over the tooth surface and at the same time minimizing contact of the solution on the gums.
This is much better for people who may have sensitivities and ensures an even whitening of the smile. These are the exact same trays that dentists use.
Claims other companies make that self moulded trays are just as effective are simply not true – you can never achieve the consistent accuracy that is required for first class whitening with the self moulded tray method.

How much gel is used per treatment?

Only a small drop (not much bigger than a pinhead) is placed in each tooth chamber.
There is enough solution provided to allow for at least 14 days of treatment and touch ups.

Is this product the same as the one dentists sell?

The Smile™ whitening gels and custom whitening trays are exactly the same product that the best dentists use.

 What are the products limitations?
Smile™ cannot whiten any artificial dental restorations however there can be some cleaning effect on stains that have occurred on these over time.
Dental veneers are thin semi translucent shells of porcelain or composite which have been bonded onto the front side of a person's teeth. Restorations of this kind may show an improvement as the tooth behind the restoration is able to be whitened.

Non translucent restorations such as crowns, fillings or bridges will be unaffected except for the mentioned cleaning effect. Whitening can be useful in these cases if natural teeth have darkened beyond the colour of a neighboring restoration.

After whitening the lightened color of the natural teeth is not always an exact match to the restoration, but it can be a significant improvement. Some people have receding gums on one or more teeth. The root surface (dentin) which becomes visible as gums recede has an appearance which is usually darker than the rest of the tooth. This whitening method will not effectively lighten dentin.

How long have you been in business?

CDD Laboratories Pty Ltd is an Australian registered company. We are part of one of the countries most respected dental laboratories with over 20 years experience in whitening products and manufacture.

Is CDD Laboratories an internet only company?

No, we are part of a fully operational professional dental laboratory serving dentists and retailers Australia wide.

How does Smile™ dentist quality whitening compare to other products?

Basically other products do not work as effectively. Toothpastes, bleaching strips and paint-on products suffer from low concentration solutions and less than effective delivery methods. Over the counter or internet self mouldable tray systems do not hold the gel in the proper position. Also many of the whitening gels used in these products are not thick enough to stay in place and will leak out of the tray. Most over the counter type gels typically have less effective active ingredients or a lower concentration of active ingredients.
Smile™ whitening gels and custom laboratory fabricated trays are the “gold standard” method of smile whitening – exactly the same as that used by the best dentists.

What is a whitening tray and how does it work?

It is a soft, flexible appliance that is designed to hold the whitening gel in place fitting comfortably over the teeth. Custom laboratory fabricated trays optimize the whitening process by keeping the gel in contact with the teeth. Our custom laboratory fabricated trays are very thin and very clear, made to fit your teeth exactly. These are the very same trays that dentists use.

How do I get started?

Easy, Smile™ dentist quality whitening kits may be purchased from your Smile™ distributor or via the internet at www.cddlabs.com.au

What if I make a mistake with my impression?

Your Smile™ kit contains printed instructions which provide an overview of the technique as well as a unique DVD tutor which takes you through the process in real time. However in the unlikely event that you do have a problem just contact us and we will send a replacement impression kit for just the cost of postage and handling.

My dentist told me that whitening could damage my teeth?

Smile™ uses a non acidic (neutral pH) gel with dental carbamide peroxide as the active ingredient. Our Smile™ gel is exactly the same solution that dentists use. You should however be wary of cheaper products that contain acid washes or acid in the gel which can ruin your teeth and strip enamel.

My teeth were stained by medicines when I was a child, can Smile™ help?

Yes. Teeth stained from antibiotics given during tooth development have been shown to respond to whitening. People with stains on the lower two-thirds of the tooth (the biting edge) may see a better cosmetic result than those that have stains on the upper third of the tooth, near the gum line. You will notice an improvement but it may take longer than usual to whiten this type of stain

What is the effect of Smile™ on white spots on teeth?

Whitening will have no effect on white spots (flurosis or calcium deposits) however, it can whiten the surrounding teeth to help balance your teeth colouring.

 Does whitening harm my gums?

Whitening gels have no long term adverse effect on gums and can often improve the health of gum tissue due to the antibacterial effects of the peroxide whitening gel.

Will Smile whiten crowns, veneers or fillings?
Smile™ cannot whiten any artificial dental restorations however there can be some cleaning effect on stains that have occurred on these over time.
Dental veneers are thin semi translucent shells of porcelain or composite which have been bonded onto the front side of a person's teeth. Restorations of this kind may show an improvement as the tooth behind the restoration is able to be whitened.

After whitening the lightened color of the natural teeth is not always an exact match to the restoration, but it can be a significant improvement.

What if I swallow the whitening gel?

With every dental whitening system you will inevitably swallow a small amount of whitening gel. This is normal and except for the taste, does not constitute a hazard.

Because of their perfect fit our custom laboratory fabricated trays minimise the amount of solution needed to whiten your smile and hence the potential for swallowing solution is also reduced.

Can I use Smile™ if I am pregnant or lactating?

As with other non-essential medications it is not recommended to use this product when pregnant or lactating.

Does it hurt?

Over half of all people experience some type of sensitivity, whether it is in one tooth, near the edges of the teeth or around the gum line where the gums are receding. Temporary tooth sensitivity during treatment is always relieved upon the discontinuation or completion of treatment. Sensitivity usually occurs early in the treatment process and reduces with use. Others may have non specific temporary sensitivity in their tongue, or throat. Temporary whitening of the gums indicates too much gel applied to the trays and is only transient. There are no other significant side effects.

 What if I experience sensitivity?

Reduce your whitening treatment to every other day or every third day. Toothpastes which contain potassium nitrate such as Sensodyne™ can soothe the nerves endings and help eliminate tooth sensitivity.

Can I talk or eat with the trays and gel in?

You can certainly talk with your trays in place however eating and drinking is not recommended and should be avoided for at least an hour after treatments. Water is fine to quench your thirst in this first hour but best avoided if possible when the trays are in place so as not to dilute the whitening gel.

Does this treatment replace regular dental maintenance?

No, your dentist is an integral part of maintaining your oral health and should be consulted on a regular basis to ensure oral health.

Will whitening work on tartar and calculus build up?
This procedure only whitens stained teeth. It does not remove tartar build-up. This needs to be removed by a dentist or hygienist.

What is the shelf life of the gel?
The Whitening gel has a long life at room temperature (the product expiry date is detailed on each of our syringes). Whitening gel should not be stored at high temperatures, nor should it be frozen, normal refrigeration can enhance the product life.

Can I buy extra gel for touchups?

Smile™ gel is available in 5 x 1.3grm syringe touch up packs.

I already have whitening trays can I just buy the gel?

Certainly, we are happy to supply our Smile™ whitening gel only. Packs of 5 x 1.3grm syringes and nozzles are available.
